What I’d like to point out today is a pattern to recessions and how to spot the recovery. The biggest billboard of a heads up is the recent traction in the stock market. The market has risen 50 percent since the 4th quarter of 2008 and the Dow just went over 10,000 again after going all the way down to 6400 last year.

These higher valuations of stocks have usually signaled that a recovery in the economy is on the way in 6 months. Starting when the market makes a move significantly higher (August/September 09) that would put us at a positive GDP by the 2nd quarter of 2010. Stock prices have been a 6 month leading indicator of recovery in every consumer lead recession that I’ve seen. I’m 60 years old so that’s 5 recessions that have affected me. On the other hand don’t pay any attention to the unemployment rate as it doesn’t tell us anything useful as it is a lagging indicator and is the last statistic to recover.

The point I’m making with all this is that if this pattern repeats itself (and that’s not at all definite) it would mean that Boston real estate prices will firm up in the spring and move higher. Housing prices rise when the stock market is going up. Buyers come out to see properties when the stock market is going up. I didn’t see a lot of buyers when the Dow was at 6400!

Boston Homes are always at least 10 percent more expensive in the Spring/Summer months than in the Autumn/Winter months anyway so if the pattern repeats, the real estate market in the Boston area will be reaching its bottom in November/December 2009 and there may be no looking back from there. January 2010 marks the beginning of the spring market in Boston Real Estate. This, combined with an expanding economy, is likely to bolster the already unshakable resolve the sellers have to hold prices higher.

Please don’t take this as a market prediction, the stock market thoroughly cured me of that hubris. I’m just pointing out a pattern. Patterns change of course, if they didn’t we would all be rich. This particular pattern occurs because buyers see the stock market go up and it calms and reassures them enough to pull the trigger. If you asked most buyers, I doubt they would be consciously studying the movements of the Dow and the Nasdaq, however on a deep level they know the economy is expanding and that leads to confidence.

Don’t compare Boston real estate with any other part of the country. Prices here haven’t fallen very much because of our “best in the world” hospitals and schools. From here it looks to me that prices will move higher right along with the endless demand to be near Beth Israel Hospital, Childrens Hospital, Mass General, the Longwood complex, BU Medical Center, Harvard, Harvard Medical School, MIT, Berkeley School of Music, BU, BC etc. etc.

As might be expected, many people are born with an inner-ear dysfunction. But this problem can also be acquired in any number of ways throughout the various stages of your life. Let’s examine some of these possibilities.

GENETICALLY ACQUIRED

Inner-ear dysfunction is frequently in the genes, passed down from generation to generation in a faulty genetic blueprint. If you inherited your inner-ear problems, chances are that other members of your family (parents, grandparents, siblings) have similar problems.

Some of your family members may have phobias; maybe even the same ones you have. Some may have different inner-ear-related symptoms. Others may have phobias and other related symptoms. And some fortunate members of your family may have no visible signs of inner-ear dysfunction.

It all depends on the luck of the draw. But if your inner-ear dysfunction was inherited, chances are you will find ample evidence of some inner-ear problems in your family tree, once you know what to look for.

ACQUIRED DURING FETAL DEVELOPMENT

Many factors affect the physiological development of an unborn child. If any of these specifically affect the development of the inner-ear system you may be born with an inner-ear dysfunction, even though it´s not part of your genetic blueprint. These factors, which the pregnant mother may or may not have been aware of, include:

• Toxemia

• Disease states during pregnancy, such as diabetes and various glandular disorders

• Infections during pregnancy

• Drug use or abuse during pregnancy

• Falling or other accidents during pregnancy

• Anoxia during pregnancy, oxygen deprivation from a twisted or wrapped umbilical cord

• Malnutrition

ACQUIRED AT BIRTH

Various complications during delivery can damage a previously healthy inner-ear system, including:

• Premature birth

• Oxygen deprivation (from umbilical cord strangulation during delivery) Fetal “concussions” caused by:

a) improper use of forceps

b) tight birth canal

c) forced labor

d) precipitated birth

ACQUIRED DURING CHILDHOOD OR ADOLESCENCE

Even if you are born with a perfectly healthy inner-ear system, many factors can interfere with its normal development, including:

• Severe or repeated ear infections

• Mononucleosis

• Sinus infections and other illnesses known to affect the inner-ear system Concussion states (from a fall or other accident)

• Whiplash

• Malnutrition

• Allergic or toxic disturbances

• Drug use or abuse

• Various degenerative disorders

• Unusual or prolonged emotional stress Endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism, etc.)

• Surgery or anesthesia

ACQUIRED DURING ADULT LIFE

Regardless of your age, and regardless of how healthy your inner-ear system is, a variety of factors can damage that system at any time. Every item on the preceding list is capable of inflicting this damage. In addition, a healthy inner-ear system can be disrupted by the chemical changes brought on by menopause and by the degenerative effects of old age.

SETTING THE STAGE

As you can see, there are innumerable ways to acquire an inner-ear dysfunction. No wonder this physiological problem is present, to some degree, in more than 20 percent of the population. But regardless of whether you were born with this dysfunction or acquired it at some point in your life, the stage has been set. For once the inner ear is impaired, you are vulnerable to the onset of a vast array of phobias and related symptoms.

Twitter is a great way to use Social Media Marketing to build visibility, grow your list and make profits. But you gotta know how to do it right.

I see newbies and even experienced marketers alike making the same three deadly yet avoidable mistakes. Let’s take a closer look at these mistakes and what to do instead. If you see yourself in any of the 3 avoidable deadly mistakes, don’t panic. Be glad you discovered the mistake and what to do about it, and then change your course. Don’t sit around pining over your mistakes and get stuck there. Just change your strategies and move forward.

Mistake 1 – Begin with marketing – This applies to those who are just starting out on Twitter as well as how to start every day on Twitter. When you are just starting out, focus on relationships and building connections, as well as being visible. Think of it this way: you have to earn the right to market. You earn the right to market by being sociable. After you have spent time building relationships, then you can market, drive traffic, build your list and even make sales from Twitter. Always think relationship first.

Start out each day on Twitter by being sociable. How would you like it if your spouse started to market you first thing in the morning before ever saying good morning? Exactly.

Mistake 2 – Being serious all the time – I see so many people tweet like they are presenting a paper at an international conference. While you do want to be serious about what you do, you also want to add a little fun as well. Let your personality show. This goes a long way it helping people to know, like and trust you. Who do you like to be friends with? Those who are serious all the time or those that have an engaging personality and are not afraid to show it in any situation?

Mistake 3 – Don’t get involved in conversations/community – I call this being a “hit & run” tweeter. These folks come in, dump their message, (usually a marketing message) and then they are gone. Big mistake. Become involved in discussions, answer questions, become a recognized part of the community.

You can take about anything. Recently I used a quote from M*A*S*H and got into a coversation with someone about the characters from the show. Simple relationship building.

Heat is more properly called the estrous cycle. During this cycle, female dogs may get pregnant. It’s equivalent to human menstruation.

2. What are the symptoms?

Females bleed from the vagina sometimes with swelling of the vulva and increased urination. Don’t expect bleeding comparable to a human female.

For small dogs, it’s usually not much and you may need to pay close attention to your puppy to identify her first cycle. Other than the bleeding, the most noticeable symptom may be

male dogs hanging around your house.

3. When does a dog come into heat?

The average female dog has her first cycle about six months of age. A few dogs start earlier and few dogs later, even as late as 14-months.

If you have a new female puppy, you should watch her and note when she has her first cycle. If she’s 14-months old and still hasn’t't been in heat, you should take her to a veterinarian.

4. How long does the heat cycle last?

The average is three weeks or 21-days. In some dogs, it lasts only two weeks while others go four weeks.

5. How often will she be in heat?

Most female dogs have regular cycles usually every six to eight months. It’s quite typical to be in heat twice a year.

6. When can she get pregnant?

She can get pregnant only when in heat. Some breeders

test for progesterone levels to identify the most fertile days but the rule-of-thumb is that the most fertile days are 11-15 of her cycle.

Note – when she’s in heat, the average dog will permit any male

dog to mount her. Few females, however, will accept a male when

they’re not in heat.

7. Can she get pregnant her first cycle?

Yes. However, responsible breeders generally would not breed a dog that early. For one thing, you need to do genetic testing and some serious problems such as hip conditions do not show up until a dog is approximately 2-years of age.

8. Can I take her on walks during this cycle?

Yes with care. She has no problem with the exercise but she’s a walking magnet for male dogs.

Even the best trained and behaved female dog will succumb to hormones. You can’t trust her off a leash or out of your control. Never let her outside by herself even in a fenced yard if there is any possibility of male dogs nearby.

For walks, if there are male dogs in your neighborhood, it’s a good idea to take your dog in your car and drive to a remote area. Take her for the walk there and drive back home. Otherwise, the scent of her urine and vaginal discharge will blaze a trail to your home.

9. When I can have her spayed?

The answer to that one has changed continually over the

25-years I’ve been in the dog business. People used to be told to let their dog go through at least one cycle or let them have one litter.

Today, veterinarians are doing it much earlier. Some vets spay as early as 6-weeks of age! Talk to your veterinarian about your dog and the vet’s preferences. The state of veterinary medicine also is much improved over the past 25-years.

10. If I don’t have her spayed, will she go through menopause.

No. Her fertility may decline but she will not go through menopause comparable to a human’s. She won’t lose her ability to become pregnant even as a senior so if you don’t want to her to have any (or more) litters, she must be spayed.
